Food and Beverage Manufacturing Industry in South Africa

What this hub is for

South Africa’s food and beverage manufacturing sector runs from milling, dairy, meat and poultry processing, bakery and confectionery through to canning, snacks and the full beverage range. Buyers who land here are usually trying to do one of four things: find a company that manufactures a product, find a company that supplies it, find someone to make a product under their own brand, or work out which of those they actually need.

This page is the orientation layer for that decision. Each route below hands you to the resource that covers it properly, so you are not reading a company list when what you needed was a compliance explainer.

Choose your route

Find a food manufacturing company

Use this when you are sourcing from a business that actually produces food, and you want to compare producers by product category and production location. See the list of food manufacturing companies in South Africa.

Find a beverage manufacturer

Beverage production carries its own equipment, licensing and packaging considerations, so it is kept separate from the food list. Browse beverage manufacturing companies.

Find a processed-food supplier

Suppliers are not always manufacturers. If you need stock rather than production capacity, and you are comparing product ranges and delivery coverage, start with supplier discovery. Browse processed food suppliers.

Have a product made under your own brand

Contract manufacturers and co-packers produce or pack to your specification. This is the route for private label, for brand owners without a factory, and for businesses testing a line before investing in plant. Read the contract manufacturing and co-packer guide.

Manufacturer, supplier or co-packer: what the roles mean

These three get used interchangeably in enquiries, and the mismatch costs time on both sides. The short version:

Role What the business does Choose this route when Start here
Manufacturer Produces goods in its own facility, usually under its own brands You want production capability, a specific factory location or a category specialist Food manufacturers or beverage manufacturers
Supplier or distributor Buys, holds and resells stock, often across several brands You need available product, range breadth or delivery coverage rather than a factory Processed food suppliers
Contract manufacturer or co-packer Produces or packs to your recipe and specification You own the brand and need someone to make or pack it for you Contract manufacturing and co-packers

One company can hold more than one of these roles. Confirm which one applies before you send a specification or ask for pricing, and ask the business to state it rather than inferring it from a website description.

What to check before you commit

Two things are worth keeping separate: what the law requires of a food business, and what your customer or retailer requires of you commercially.

  • Certificate of acceptability. Under the Regulations Governing General Hygiene Requirements for Food Premises, the Transport of Food and Related Matters (R638, published 22 June 2018 under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972), food may not be handled on premises for which a valid certificate of acceptability has not been issued or is not in force. It is applied for in writing and issued by the local authority for that area following an inspection. Ask to see it, and check the name and the premises address on it.
  • Labelling, additives and composition. These sit under separate regulations administered by the National Department of Health, which maintains the current set on its food control regulations page. Our food label compliance checklist covers what buyers tend to check first.
  • Third-party certification. Schemes such as FSSC 22000 and BRCGS are ordinarily a customer or retailer requirement rather than a general legal one. Treat a certificate as evidence of an audited system against a defined scope on a defined date, not as a blanket guarantee. Our comparison of BRCGS and FSSC 22000 explains the difference.

For a structured way to work through this with a counterparty you have not dealt with before, use the supplier vetting checklist.

Where manufacturing sits in the wider picture

Manufacturing does not operate on its own. It depends on what is coming off farms, on cold chain and transport holding product in condition, and on what retailers and export customers will accept. If you are still building a picture of the sector, the food and beverage industry in South Africa overview sets out how the parts connect, and challenges facing the SA food trade market covers the pressure points operators raise most often.
