Export marketing and produce trading

The largest group. These businesses market and export fresh produce, and several also pack, source or hold stock. Accreditations here fall into two families worth telling apart: FPEF membership is trade-association membership, while GLOBALG.A.P., BRCGS, IFS and SIZA are audited standards covering farm practice, food safety or ethical trade. One says who they belong to. The other says what has been audited, on what scope, and when.

Producers and farm management

Businesses that grow or manage production rather than only trade it. If you need supply rather than a service, start here.

Cold storage and cold chain

Holding product in condition between packhouse and port. Ask about the temperature ranges a facility actually runs, not just that it is refrigerated, and about the chain of custody it can evidence.

Logistics, freight forwarding and shipping

Three different jobs sit in this group. Freight forwarders arrange and document the movement, shipping lines carry the container, and transport operators move it by road. A business may do one or several. Confirm which before you brief it.

Testing, inspection, monitoring and systems

The evidence layer. Laboratory testing, in-transit condition monitoring, traceability and packhouse systems, and grading equipment. Note that a laboratory accreditation such as ISO 17025 with SANAS is a statement about a defined testing scope, so ask what is on the schedule before you assume your test is covered.

The commercial banks with dedicated agricultural desks, plus one trade-finance specialist.

Fresh produce markets and market agents

Industry bodies and regulators

None of these supplies a service you buy, and that is the point of listing them separately. Several are the right first call for a referral, and one, the PPECB, is a statutory body whose sign-off you will need on regulated export consignments.

Questions worth asking any provider here

1. Which of these jobs do you actually do? Several of the larger groups appear under one heading but run divisions across three. Ask which division would handle your work.
2. What is the scope on that accreditation, and when does it expire? The column above reproduces what each organisation lists in the guide. It is a starting point, not a certificate.
3. Where do you operate, as opposed to where is your office? The location column gives the address in the guide. Service area is a separate question and is not published by most of these businesses.
4. For exports, what do you handle and what stays with me? Documentation, PPECB inspection scheduling, cold chain and the shipping booking can sit with different parties. Establish the split in writing.
5. Can you evidence the cold chain end to end? For anything perishable, a provider that can produce condition records is worth more than one that says the truck was refrigerated.

Entries are drawn from the service provider section of Fresh Food Trade SA 2026, the twenty-fourth edition, published by Malachite Publishing in association with the Perishable Products Export Control Board and the Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum. Every website was checked on 7 September 2026: seventy-nine of the eighty-two responded, and the three that did not are marked in the tables rather than shown as working links.
