As producers in the South African agricultural sector face a unique set of circumstances the SIZA Standards were developed to take these circumstances into account and to assist suppliers to reach compliance in a way that is practical and relevant. The Siza Ethnical (Social) and Environmental Standards are rooted in South African legislation, while also expanding on risk areas that are particularly important in South Africa. To further the cause for compliance and to ensure that South African producers remain on the forefront of global trends, the SIZA Standard also includes the implementation of globally recognised good agricultural practices and requirements.
SIZA’s strength lies in our hands-on approach, SIZA does not only support producers to reach compliance, but we also ensure that risks are as low as possible for buyers. This is achieved by implementing dedicated audit oversight and enforcing strict competency requirements for SIZA approved third party auditors and audit entities.
The SIZA programme has expanded to become a multisector agri- wide programme and is accepted and recognised by 210 businesses across 17 countries.
SIZA is proud to have an efficient and well-deigned platform which create visibility for all stakeholders and provide access to accurate and credible data to all relevant stakeholders. SIZA believes in partnerships, therefore, an application programming interface (API) was developed with the GLOBALG.A.P. database to ensure that data is shared and visible for the convenience of global buyers.
SIZA offers a compliance and market-readiness programme for emerging growers which assists them to comply with global market requirements with the aim to get market-ready to export their fruit. These growers receive the necessary assistance and training over a three-year period, after which they are deemed to be audit ready.
Through awareness-raising initiatives, capacity building programmes, routine visits and a third-party audit system, SIZA aims to encourage the implementation of best-practices that are in excess of minimum legal requirements and address broader social and environmental impacts. In doing so, SIZA ensures that South Africa’s agricultural labour force and natural environment, and food security is sustained for future generations.
